With Spring comes spring cleaning around the resort and studio grounds. Although we are enjoying being outdoors and in the sun, the studio is always ready for a visit. If you need that special gift, or just feeling creative-and don't mind messy fingers, give us a call.

As winter releases it's grip on the northland I used a day of warm weather to get a few shots from outside the studio. Now that the snow is melting and the grounds are starting to dry up the Raku firing equipment is again accessible, I think a firing is in the near future.....
I had no idea how much headache a hard drive failure can cause. Unfortunately I know now.
Recently we once again took the studio on the road and visited the artists at May Creek. We have so much fun working with the people and watching them create we can't wait to go back. As you can see the theme was valentines day with heart shaped ceramic containers as the subject. Here they are in action! Kris has been having some fun of her own in the studio working with combining glass and pottery to discover what can be created with the two together. The silica in the glaze combines very nicely with glass to somewhat mix and bond together. The pieces are beautiful with the very neat crackle effect that develops in the glass. Crackling is caused by the different rates of expansion and contraction of the glass vs. the clay when subject to the kiln heat. The glaze used in this piece is called "Midas Touch".
Karissa made a Sushi dish set in the usual way except for the exceptional detail she used to draw a picture in the plates. A product we have is a "paint" made from finely crushed glass that is used very similarly to paint. Because it is glass based, it fuses with the base glass when fired in the kiln. I don't have a detail picture so I enlarged one of the plates to give you an idea of how it looks.
Picture frames in glass are proving to be a big hit with kids. Once the frames are completed, we glue them to a stand with a picture slot-so they stand up and your picture is protected. Sun catchers to hang in your window have been a consistent hit with everyone!
To tell the truth, I don't know if there is name for this so it'll just call it a knitters bowl. The ball of yarn goes in the bowl with the end pulled through the slot carved out of the side. As the knitter pulls yarn while knitting, the yarn ball spins in the bowl instead of rolling around. It's a great idea by whoever thought of it. And the best part, you could make your own of your very own design and glazed to perfection in colors that match you, we can show you how.
Isn't this the neatest bird house you've seen? Kris got an idea for this somewhere and of course sat down at the wheel and nailed it. It's manganese stoneware with glazed highlights with some of the clay left unglazed-the lighter tan body. Plus the little stem on top acts as a hanger!
With the change to the new website design all of the old blog posts went with the old site. If you want to see something again, respond to this post and I'll give it my best shot to find it and post it again. |
